DOULA FAQs
Answering Your Questions
Why Should I Hire A Doula?
A doula clarifies the labor stages and guides you in communication with your medical team of doctors, nurses, or midwives. She fosters tranquility and is trained to support you during labor with soothing techniques to ease discomfort and promote safe progress. As labor draws near, a doula coaches expectant birthing families on comfort and relaxation techniques, offers nurturing emotional support, provides information on labor and the birth, and offers information about options and medical procedures available during labor. While other staff on your medical team will need to tend to other patients, A doula never leaves your side.
Does a doula replace nursing staff?
No. Doulas do not replace nurses or other medical staff. Doulas do not perform clinical or medical tasks. We are there to comfort and support the mother and to enhance communication between the mother and medical professionals.
Do you offer postpartum support?
I offer 2 postpartum visits. One week postpartum and another at 6 weeks postpartum to make sure mom is adjusting well with new baby.
What are the benefits of having a doula?
Birth doulas are statistically proven to improve outcomes:
31% decrease in the use of Pitocin*
28% decrease in the risk of C-section*
12% increase in the likelihood of a spontaneous vaginal birth*
9% decrease in the use of any medications for pain relief
14% decrease in the risk of newborns being admitted to a special care nursery
34% decrease in the risk of being dissatisfied with the birth experience*
Will you come to my home or the hospital during labor?
Both! The goal of a doula is to keep you comfortable during labor and at your home for as long as you want to stay there. Have your doula come to your home during labor so she can help you decide when to leave for the hospital, if you're not quite sure.
What happens if I need a C-Section
Doulas provide support for all types of births, including surgical births. For cesareans, we provide in-person support as much as the birthing facility/hospital will allow us to do so. We are often alongside clients in surgery - we can take photos with your phone or camera and offer support any way a client sees fit. If the hospital or provider won't allow doulas in the OR, we will be with you before surgery and join you post op to assist in a proper breastfeeding latch. If your OB is flexible, we may be able to join you in the OR when your partner escorts baby to the nursery.
